Plant and containers

Across South Florida
The plant that turns up, and what it reaches.
Two heavy wheeled Komatsu excavators, one medium tracked machine, around five roll-off containers and a pair of dump trucks, all ours, plus two mini excavators we rent in. We do not let machines out: we do the work with them. This page is here because the machine that arrives decides what is possible on a tight lot, and that is worth knowing before you choose anyone.
Heavy wheeled excavators, Komatsu
2Two heavy wheeled Komatsu excavators. Wheels rather than tracks, which on a South Florida job is usually the right answer: they drive onto a street or a finished surface without matting it out, they reposition in seconds, and they do not need a low loader to move a block.
Structural and residential demolition, concrete breaking, sorting and loading into containers or trucks. The machine of choice on an urban lot, a paved yard or anywhere the surface has to survive the job, and often the reason no low loader is needed at all.
Medium tracked excavator
1One medium tracked excavator, for the ground the wheeled machines should not be on.
Soft or broken ground, fill, slopes and anywhere flotation matters more than speed between positions. Also the machine that goes behind a house where a wheeled one cannot turn.
Mini excavators
2, rented inOne to two tonne mini excavators for loading debris, rented in rather than owned. Around 39 inches across the tracks, which is narrow enough to go through a side gate, down a path, through a doorway and onto a slab. Dump height on a one tonne machine is about 5.5 feet, which reaches a trailer or the low rail of a container and not the side of a 30 yard box.
Loading debris out of a back garden, a courtyard or the inside of a building, and feeding a trailer or the low rail of a container. The point of them is not power, it is access: on a tight Miami lot the difference between a machine that fits down the side of the house and one that does not is the difference between a machine job and a wheelbarrow job.
Roll-off containers
about 5Around five open-top roll-off containers that can be dropped on site and left under loading.
Set down where the machine can reach them, swapped out as they fill. Enough of them to keep more than one job supplied, or to keep a single large job from stopping while a full one is away at the landfill.
Dump trucks
2A pair of tipper dump trucks, for sites where a standing container does not suit.
Loaded directly from the machine and driven straight to the landfill. The answer where there is nowhere to stand a container, where the right of way cannot be occupied, or where the volume is large enough that waiting for a swap would be the slow part.
Make, model, operating weight, attachments carried, container size in cubic yards and the trucks' legal payload are not published here yet. They will be, exactly as they are, rather than as a description of what a fleet this size usually holds. Ask about the machine that would come to you and you will be told what it is.
How it is used
The machines come with the work. We do not hire plant out by the day, and there is no machine rate anywhere on this site, because what we sell is the job rather than the equipment. Taking a building apart is licensed contracting in Florida whoever is sitting in the cab, so the licensed scopes are contracted by the licence holder and the clearance and haulage are contracted by us.
The container is dropped where the machine can reach it, swapped when it is full, and the material goes to a facility that takes it, with the weight tickets handed back. A truck is loaded direct and driven, which suits a site where a container cannot stand. Those two have a published price, which is on the price list.
All of it works across Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach. What changes between the three is not the machine, it is who permits the hauling, and the rules documented on this site are Miami-Dade's.
Hauling is permitted work too
Demolition is licensed under one statute and carrying the debris away is permitted under something else entirely. Miami-Dade County Code chapter 15, Solid Waste Management, administered by the Department of Solid Waste Management Code Enforcement Permit Section.
General Hauler Permit
To engage in the business of solid waste or recyclable material collection, removal or transport for disposal, hire or salvage over the street or public right of way within any incorporated or unincorporated area of the county. Construction and demolition debris is a checkbox on the application.
$630 per year, plus $74 per vehicle per year
Small Hauler Permit
The same activity, but only within an incorporated area of the county. A job in unincorporated Miami-Dade needs the general permit.
$315 per year, plus $74 per vehicle per year
Gross vehicle weight of the truck must not exceed 26,000 lbs, which rules out most loaded tandem dump trucks.
What the permit obliges
- 01Every registered vehicle, trailer and container unit is permanently marked on both front side doors in letters of at least 2 inches with the hauler's name, the DSWM permit number, the vehicle number, the Miami-Dade Local Business Tax Receipt number and the vehicle tare weight.
- 02A Miami-Dade Local Business Tax Receipt is required separately, under article IX section 8A-171 of the county code.
- 03Permit holders inside the Department's service area may not contract to provide waste or recycling service to any property the code defines as residential.
- 04For properties in the unincorporated county service area, an authorisation form goes to the Department for approval before service starts and before any agreement is signed.
- 05Private haulers operating in the disposal facility fee area file a DFF report and pay the fee by the 25th of each month for the month before.
- 06The application carries a notarised affidavit, proof of active Florida incorporation, current registration for every vehicle, and a list of every customer served in the past 12 months with the material types taken from each.
Insurance the county sets
- General liability, minimum per occurrence: $300,000 bodily injury and $50,000 property damage.
- Automobile liability: $1,000,000 combined single limit.
- The certificate must name Miami-Dade Solid Waste Management as certificate holder.
Broward and Palm Beach run their own hauling rules and they are not documented here. Nothing on this page should be read as describing them.
